About Coastal Barrier & Gary Silverthorn
Experience Built Across Service, Security, Business, and Leadership
Coastal Barrier brings more than four decades of military, corporate security, defense contracting, business ownership, training, and executive leadership experience together to help organizations protect their people, property, operations, and reputation.
Why Coastal Barrier Exists
One Company Built from a Lifetime of Experience
Gary Silverthorn established Coastal Barrier to bring the lessons, judgment, and capabilities developed throughout his career into one advisory organization.
That experience spans military special operations, corporate security, physical-security assessments, defense contracting, business development, entrepreneurship, instruction, and executive decision-making.
Coastal Barrier was not created to sell equipment, guards, or fear. It was created to help leaders understand their exposure, make sound decisions, and build security and safety programs that work in the real operating environment.
Our purpose is to replace assumptions and disconnected security measures with clarity, priorities, accountability, and coordinated readiness.
Security Challenges Rarely Exist in Isolation
A camera problem may actually be a monitoring problem. An access-control problem may be a policy or accountability problem. An emergency-response problem may originate with unclear authority, insufficient training, or plans that have never been tested.
Coastal Barrier examines the entire operating environment:
- People
- Property
- Policies and procedures
- Security technology
- Emergency and medical response
- Staffing and supervision
- Vendors and contractors
- Leadership and accountability
- Training and exercises
- Implementation and continuous improvement
This broader view helps leadership understand not only what needs attention, but why it matters and what should happen first.
About Gary Silverthorn
Leadership Formed in Demanding Environments
Gary Silverthorn served more than 20 years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps and United States Army.
After beginning his military career as a Marine infantryman, he joined the Army and served in the Ranger community in progressively responsible leadership, instructional, and operational assignments. His experience includes service as an Army Ranger First Sergeant, Ranger squad leader, senior instructor, operations leader, and Special Operations liaison.
His military service included support to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and required disciplined planning, leadership under pressure, risk management, training, coordination, and responsibility for people and mission outcomes.
After retiring from the military, Gary entered the corporate and defense-contracting sectors. His work has included:
- Corporate security leadership
- Facility security responsibilities
- Physical-security vulnerability assessments
- Security-program development
- High-threat operational support
- Government and defense contracting
- Business development and procurement
- Logistics and program management
- Personnel selection, training, and development
- Executive leadership and organizational growth
Gary also founded, operated, and sold businesses. That experience gives him an owner's understanding of financial realities, operational disruption, staffing pressures, liability, reputation, and the need for recommendations that can actually be implemented.
He earned a degree from Troy State University, focusing on General Education and Criminal Justice.

Coastal Barrier's approach
Practical, Independent, and Proportionate
Coastal Barrier's work is guided by several principles:
- Independent: Recommendations are not driven by equipment sales or installation commissions.
- Vendor-neutral: The client's needs define the requirements.
- All-hazards: Assessments consider security, safety, medical, emergency, operational, and human factors.
- Operationally practical: Recommendations must support the organization's actual mission, culture, and resources.
- Prioritized: Leadership receives a phased plan instead of an unmanageable list of problems.
- Discreet: Sensitive information is handled carefully and shared only with appropriate decision-makers.
- Implementation-focused: A report has limited value unless recommendations are assigned, completed, and validated.
- Non-fear-based: The purpose is informed preparation—not anxiety or unnecessary security measures.
The transformation
From Uncertainty to Coordinated Readiness
Clients engage Coastal Barrier because they need more than another opinion or equipment proposal.
They need to move from:
- Undocumented concerns to a prioritized risk register
- Disconnected security measures to one coordinated strategy
- Unclear responsibilities to established authority and accountability
- Reactive purchases to phased investment decisions
- Untested plans to validated response capabilities
- Vendor-driven recommendations to leadership-controlled requirements
- A report sitting on a shelf to an implemented and maintained program
The result is a clearer understanding of what is working, what needs attention, what should happen first, and who is responsible.
